It happens to all of us. Sometimes we are sitting with our art journals open, yet we draw a blank. Everyone gets stuck, sometimes and needs some inspiration.

These art journal prompts will not only help get your page started, they can help you become a better artist by pushing you to study color, shape, and design. 

Art Journal Prompts can Improve your Art

Having prompt and staying in those limits can really boost the imagination.

20 Art Journal Prompts

 

1.) under the sea ~ create real or mythical sea creatures 

2.) animals in clothes ~ cute or realistic animals in clothes can always make you smile

3.) happy thoughts ~ write down things that make you happy

4.) flower arrangements ~ turn your page into one giant flower arrangement 

5.) Favorite quote ~ illustrate or embellish your favorite quote 

 

6.) Fan art ~ draw your favorite characters. Try doing it in your style as well

7.) self-portrait ~ do a self-portrait, try changing your hair color, or adding glasses, experimenting is fun.

8.) ships at sea ~ turn your page into the ocean. Have fun drawing fun shaped boats.

9.) chairs ~ draw chairs of all sizes and color combinations. Simple shapes can create fabulously interesting pieces.

10.) eye study ~ let the eyes have it. Fill your page with all types, shapes and sizes of eyes. Have fun coloring them.

11.) color theory fun ~ explore color combinations you never thought of combining. Don’t worry about shapes or images, just color.

12.) fruit ~ fruit can be satisfying to eat and to paint. Draw you color your favorites.

13.) collage ~ cut out some magazine images and add to them, layer them, repaint them.

14.) lips ~ draw as many pairs of lips as you can fit on the page. Explore shapes and colors of mouths.

15.) desserts ~ fun and fancy cams, cookies, and donuts can fill your page with color and whimsy.

16.) trees ~ realistic or fanciful trees. Go outside and find some inspiration. 

17.) draw your ideal house ~ let your inner architect out and have fun.

18.) shapes ~ play with shapes, triangles, blocks, diamonds. Explore dimensions and color with shapes. 

19.) fashion ~ draw dresses, your dream outfit. You can keep it simple or make it elaborate.

20.) art from your favorite artist ~ it can be a classical artist or your favorite instagram artist, play with making a piece of their art. Don’t claim it as your own, that is bad. Find a good piece and try copying it, you may learn something new.
