How to start a prayer journal
Starting a prayer art journal is ideal for an artist who also wants to grow in their prayer life. Even if your not an artist, it you want to express the inner creativity you have (btw, I think this makes you an artists).
An art journal is a creative dairy. It’s a little scrapbook, a little sketchbook, a lot of art awesomeness. You can read my article on what it is and how A prayer journal focuses on prayers, scriptures you include, the cries of your heart towards Heaven to start it here.
Why not combine to two into a wonderful, work of art that focuses your attention on the Creator of all art, God, the ultimate artist.
War Room in your Journal
If you have seen the movie The War Room you may be familiar with taking Bible verses and writing them down along with prayers.
A prayer journal is similar. However, you get to incorporate your creativity. You are taking time to create, to focus on God and the prayers of your heart. You’re finding scriptures that you are going to stand on.
You don’t have to draw or paint anything if you don’t want to. You can use pretty paper and fun art supplies to express your prayers and write out your Bible verses.
The art you create can be images found in the verses or prayers, they can be of family members you’re praying for.
Once you’ve made your prayer journal you can take it to church, or anywhere you go, you can pass it down as a legacy to your children. You’re marking down your stand for God and the promises of his word. Remember, ” The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much,” James 5:16
Every persons prayer journal is going to be unique to the person and the art they create. You don’t have to get freaked out, you don’t have to be a super skilled artist. If you feel the urge to create you’re an artist and this will help you grow your skills and your faith.
Here are some themes for your prayer book to help get you going. Though, I do encourage making one that is super personal to you.
Themes:
- Prayer over your children/family
- Prayers to find and follow your purpose
- Prayers of deliverance (from enemies, addictions, temptations)
- Prayers for your finances/business
- Prayers to draw closer to God
- Prayers to hear and discern Gods voice
- Prayers to help witness about God
Foundation for your prayer journal
In that Bible on the opening pages I found instructions about writing your prayers. It’s perfect for starting a prayer journal.
I don’t know who wrote these words, if it came from a poster or preacher or book. They are not my words. They were passed on to me, and now I’m passing them on to you. Here they are,
“Dig into the word for scriptures that apply to your situation and make the foundation for petition.
Get on your knees and consult the Holy Spirit. Let him help you develop your petition in detail.
Praying in tongues.
Write it down. Make a formal written request by writing down every scripture you found.
Also, as you are listening to the Holy Spirit for details, write down the impressions and ideas he gives you.”
There you have it! These beautiful words are the perfect guide to start your prayer journal.

Choose your journal

I’ll also discus a few of those I think work best for my personal prayer Journals here. I want you to remember to never limit your options based on the personal preferences of someone else,
Three ringed binder
I’ve had a love for binders ever since I was a small child. They can do and hold so much. There are a couple of reasons I love them for prayer journals
1.) you can keep for than one prayer journal in the same binder.
I don’t know about you, but I’m always praying about a a ton of issues. Her, each focus can have its own separate space while being contained together.
2.) work on loose paper
I like to work on individual pages sometimes, I can take it out, sit at my dress or wherever, and work, wrote, paint, let it dry, and then add it to my binder. It’s rally convenient. You don’t have to wait for a page to dry before you go in to another.
3.) you can add as much as you want
I love that I don’t have to choose a set amount of pages. Your journal can grow as big as you want. If you out grow your binder you can get a bigger binder!
Binders are a fabulous and fun way to keep a prayer journal
Bound Journal
A bound art journal is a beautiful thing. There are so many to choose from. They come all ready to be created in. Here are some of my journal recommendations:
You can use all your beautiful art supplies in these, the paper is made to work ell with mixed media.
You can write your verses and prayers directly on the pages. Or, you can create a lovely background and then write your prayers on a separate piece of paper and collage onto your background. You can use sticky notes, anything you want.
Lined Journal
Most lined journals are not made with paper that works well with painting or mixed media. However, if you don’t want to do much are, or you plan to use mostly pencils, pens and markers this can be a suitable option.
Lines can be helpful when you plan on doing a lot of writing. These journals are usually easy to find and inexpensive. You can always add pages with glue, as well.
My favorite lined journal is the Midori A5 ruled journal. I’m in love with the beautiful craftsmanship and paper of these journal.
My Favorite Supplies
You don’t really need much for a prayer journal. You can start one with just a pen and some paper. However, I like to make everything colorful and add art where I can. So, I like to have some fun things for my journal supplies that I can also use in my Bible. Here is a list of a few supplies that I adore.
Starting your Prayer Journal
One you have your journal and some supplies it’s time to actual begin your journal. Start simply by writing your prayers. Just get something down on the page. If you want to begin your journal similar to an art journal you can check out my article on 10 ways to start an art journal page.
Next, start choose your Bible verses. You can also use sticky notes for your verses and keep them in the front of your journal and then add them as you go.
The most important step is to stay consistent.
Conclusion
The most important aspect of the prayer journal is the praying. As artists we can often express our prayers, those deep down feelings that sit in the out of our chests Betsy through our art. This form of journaling really helps to unite the two. It gets you in the Bible, praying, and using your art to glorify God! How exciting.
